Québec documents before selling an end-of-life vehicle
Before a sale, verify who legally owns the vehicle, whether a power of attorney is necessary and whether a lender or another party has an interest in it. Keep the registration information available, but do not upload photos of personal identification documents in the vehicle form.
The SAAQ distinguishes delivery to a scrap merchant or recycler with a receipt from a transfer to an authorized dealer-recycler using a transaction certificate. The applicable scrapping or registration process depends on the particular transaction. Sending an enquiry to Scrap.Autos does not change ownership.
An accidented, irreparable, inherited or out-of-province vehicle may require a different process. Verify the official SAAQ guidance and keep your transaction records rather than relying on generic assumptions.
Common questions
Does handing over the keys cancel my registration?
No. The applicable SAAQ steps must be completed for the transaction actually agreed.
Should I upload my driver’s licence in the vehicle photos?
No. Please do not include ID documents in vehicle photo uploads. Any later verification is handled separately.
What if the car still has a loan?
Disclose existing liens or security interests; the legal ability to transfer the vehicle must be verified.
